Mention the word "exercise" and most people would imagine a gym filled with people doing work-outs. This isn't an inaccurate depiction, but exercise doesn't have to be limited on spending hours at the gym. Exercise can be done in more subtle ways. Just merely increasing your daily physical activities like choosing to take the stairs than the elevator, jogging every morning, doing brisk walks for 30 minutes, or even doing some household chores can count as exercise. The benefits of exercise go beyond just giving you that perfect body figure you have always dreamed of. While it is certainly what most people hope to achieve from exercise, a few actually think of the other benefits it can provide. What are these benefits? Here are a few:
- It promotes and maintains weight loss. Exercise combined with the habit of eating the right food is a very good combination for trimming off those unwanted fats and losing weight. Done consistently, it also maintains this weight loss, letting you have more confidence as you begin to see how you are progressing. The effects might not be seen on the first few days, but keep trying!
- It increases your resistance against diseases and health conditions. Exercise has been shown to be able to reduce the risks of getting serious health problems like diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, and cancer. It also lowers blood pressure, decreases the effects of asthma, prevents osteoporosis, and helps to control the onset of arthritis.
- It cheers you up and keeps you young. Not only can exercise be a fun experience, it also has been shown to work wonders with the brain and emotions. Exercise stimulates the production of "happy" hormones called endorphins, the same hormones produced when you're laughing and smiling. Exercise also acts like a de-stressor, relieving and helping optimize the body for action. Psychologically speaking, engaging in exercise also adds up to your self-esteem and confidence.
- It helps you deal with sleep problems. A good exercise can aid in keeping sleeplessness to a minimum while at the same time it promotes a deeper sleep, helping you feel refreshed the next morning. It's not a good idea to do exercises before sleeping though, as it can just aggravate your insomnia by making you energized.
- It keeps the bloodstream clean and functional. Just as the heart is one of the most severely affected organs when one is sedentary, the opposite holds true as well. Exercise not only promotes heart health, it also keeps the bad cholesterol from dominating and clogging up your blood vessels.
- It keeps the body in a prime condition. Going beyond giving the body a good figure, exercise also promotes the body's endurance and flexibility, including increasing your muscle strength and metabolism.
